Day 4 and all is well! Today Ailbhe, Lisa, Lia, and Caoimhe stayed here in St.Mary's, to work in the Mary Rice centre for children with intellectual disabilities. This work is hard but extremely rewarding and it gives us an opportunity to work one on one with these beautiful kids! In the Mary Rice Centre the girls were working with the children on the computers teaching them how to save and open documents.
The other girls worked in St.Georges for the day, and started off playing with all the children in the yard. Everyone in the school was eagerly practising for sports day tomorrow, so our time in the morning was spent playing numerous games with all the students, including the hand clapping games "Boom boom cha cha", "January, February" and the infamous "Chips chips chips!". After a long morning in the sun, we had a well deserved cup of tea and went back down to St. Georges to take a few students into a classroom, where we spent our time making Valentine's day cards and playing bingo! We then enjoyed a delicious lunch, and headed back to St. Mary's on the metro in the afternoon.
Later we walked through the busy streets of Kolkata to a shopping centre about 40 mins away. Here we did some shopping and after we took a local bus home. This was an experience! We all really enjoyed this but we were definitely glad we had two of the senior students from St Mary's and Brother Ronnie to show us around! Back at St Mary's Sophie, Ailbhe, Lilia and Suzanna helped at the soup kitchen, handing out rice, soup and bananas to some of the local homeless people. We are all about to sit down to do a reflection and then we will go to bed :)
